Digital Binoculars

With recent developments in digital picture capturing, it was only a matter of time until the notion of combining a camera with a pair of binoculars became popular.

It is scarcely surprise that as the costs of digital cameras have dropped, making reasonably sophisticated picture capturing accessible to a broader and wider audience, this boom is spilling over into the digital binocular industry.

What has come to be known as digital binoculars is simply a misnomer.

The majority of digital binoculars are optical devices with a built-in digital camera.

You can still see via typical optical lenses, but you can also capture what you see as still photographs or short videos. The photographs are recorded on SD or MMC cards for subsequent transmission to a PC or a suitable printer.

Traditional binoculars allow you to observe the action, but there is no way to capture those pictures for posterity or to analyse them in more depth after the event, unless you have a camera set to record the same scene you are witnessing.

With the development of the combined camera and binoculars, you can still watch with the same level of clarity but, in the case of digital video, you can save those pictures for later inspection and playback.
The finest of both worlds without the need for additional equipment.

However, another piece of equipment has recently aspired to the label of Digital Binoculars, and it may have a greater claim to the moniker than current equipment.

This gadget is entirely digital. It captures the picture with a small digital camera and shows it on a 2.5-inch TFT screen through a viewing port for both eyes.

The optical zoom of the camera is up to 22x, while the digital zoom is up to 220x.

The camera auto-focuses, eliminating the need to struggle with manual focus, dioptres, and eye spacing adjustments. (IPD)

The very first Digital Binoculars. Surprisingly, the only thing it doesn’t do is record the activity.
It is now only accessible on the Internet.
