There are presently no manufacturers making ‘true’ auto focus binoculars that I am aware of. The majority of camera manufacturers include auto focus lenses as standard on all small cameras and the bulk of their SLR lens lineup. Simply switch on the camera and aim it in the direction you want to shoot. The lens will generally recognise and focus on the thing you want to picture.
There is no analogous mechanism for binoculars at the moment.
There have been efforts to mimic auto focus camera lenses using binoculars, the most prominent being a Minolta device from the 1990s.
It was said to be cumbersome, and the precision of the object on which the device decided to concentrate left much to be desired. To be honest, the same may be stated of camera lenses in low light and with poor contrast levels even now.
So, what exactly are auto focus binoculars?
The word “auto focus” might be deceptive since it suggests a device that automatically focuses the instrument. Such a mechanism does not exist. In reality, there are no moving components. The phrase is used to describe a fixed-focus device. The focus is set to infinity, thus everything from around 15m to infinity will be in focus.
Another phrase for such instruments is “focus free.”
These devices do need 20:20 vision since they depend on the focusing capabilities of the human eye-ball to accomplish part of their goal. Those who use glasses will have to utilise these binoculars while wearing their spectacles.
Auto focus binoculars have their applications, and they are an excellent choice for opera glasses and watching sports in a vast stadium. This is particularly true when they are used by two or more people, since re-focusing to adapt for each user’s eye sight is unnecessary.
They may not be the best choice for other, more comprehensive observation needs. As previously noted, there is considerable dependence on the eye’s concentrating power. Long durations of watching may be exhausting, particularly if there is movement involved.
However, auto focus binoculars, like any binoculars, have a function to perform based on your individual needs.
